What is it all about?

Autofocus (AF) is a common feature in consumer cameras, but in professional imaging applications, it is often a non-standard feature with additional setup procedures.

In machine vision applications, end-users often mount industrial cameras at fixed positions. For the most part, fixed focal lenses can meet image acquisition requirements assuming the target is within a certain depth of field (DoF).

However, when the working distance to target objects constantly changes beyond the DoF, conventional fixed focal machine vision reaches its limit. An autofocus vision solution is required. There are different autofocus technologies available, including motor-driven lens autofocus and liquid lens autofocus. A traditional motor-driven autofocus lens requires around 5 seconds each time it must move and adjust, delaying production time to refocus on each passing item. It is completely inadequate for many high-speed or precise applications that require rapid refocusing.
